Domain Names

A domain name is the network name assigned to your device. The Office of Information Technology (OIT) manages the campus domain name system (DNS).

Researchers in the School of Engineering can request a domain name in the eng.uci.edu domain (example: saunderslab.eng.uci.edu). Note that connecting a new server to the campus network is a multi-step process. Start here: https://helpdesk.eng.uci.edu/content/connecting-server

To request a DNS name, submit the OIT Domain Name Request Form for a name under eng.uci.edu, and it will generally be approved automatically. Other domains managed by Engineering (mae.uci.edu, engineering.uci.edu, etc.) are deprecated or for specialized use only (e.g., School of Engineering website).

Top level subdomains (example: saunderslab.uci.edu) are reserved for official UCI school, department, or other campus-level organizational units.  If you have questions or specialized needs, please contact helpdesk@eng.uci.edu.

Note that your computer does not require a DNS name if it does not provide services. You can connect and obtain an IP Address automatically using DHCP from a wired Ethernet port or over UCI WiFi in most Engineering building locations.
